Are link exchanges no more acceptable by google ?

Hi Guys..

Today I received one Email from a very reliable source of mine stating that link exchange is no more acceptable by google. Is it true? He provided me with some links:

www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66356

http://www.textlinksguide.com/link-exchange.html

www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769

Can you pls let me know whats going on? I am just left confused..

However, some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links - source http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66356

I think cross linking and linking out to irrelevant sites are not acceptable by google.

Link exchange is also an important way build you link but you should careful about exchanger site type and from where he is giving you backlink.

I am also agree with new_seo that cross linking is not make more effect for search engines.
