Thx for your thought.
We're not. The only thing we can think of is we've been doing more with Facebook lately but mainly with users updating their status with links to us so the data should be hidden from search engines.
I should have also mentioned that our ranking improved dramatically on some key terms (e.g. from 35 to 5), which is how this whole thing got discovered.

It's because one of your competitors (an idiot) is trying to get you banned by spamming your link all over the place (using automated software), but instead of you being banned you are being helped out.
I have seen this kind of stuff happen before. Quite funny actually.

I would analyze the inbound links to the site to identify the problem. Those numbers are too high for it to be a case of human edited dirs finally getting around to your past submissions.

I thought you folks may want to hear that we determined our increase is attributed to social media coverage.
Due to the nature of our service, we have many, many people writing about us on facebook, twitter, blog posts, and blog badges or permanent blog links. While we've been encouraging our consumers to do this more and more over time, it appears that Google has been crawling the public pages and including them in their link graph more than ever before.
The analysis is not complete, but from what we can see thus far, it's truly unbelievable how much social media mentions/links have skyrocketed our SEO. My advice to share to the community is that social media links can and will have an enormous impact on your SEO performance so make sure you have a proactive strategy for it.
Thx!
Kristen
PS- I was wrong about the 4x increase in links. It's actually 7x. Really.
