4x increase in inbound links. Why?

The last time we checked the number of inbound links in webmaster tools it said 15K (in mid June). Today it says 60K.

At my company, SEO was put on the back burner for a few months. There were no optimizations or link building campaigns. Nothing, really.

Does anyone know what happened? Did Google change something about it's link counting/crediting in the past 3 months?

This is a great problem, I just want to understand what's going on!
Thx!

If you're using a CMS, it's probably dynamic URL's, I have the same issues and apparently, it's pretty common.

Thx for your thought.
We're not. The only thing we can think of is we've been doing more with Facebook lately but mainly with users updating their status with links to us so the data should be hidden from search engines.

I should have also mentioned that our ranking improved dramatically on some key terms (e.g. from 35 to 5), which is how this whole thing got discovered.

It's because one of your competitors (an idiot) is trying to get you banned by spamming your link all over the place (using automated software), but instead of you being banned you are being helped out.

I have seen this kind of stuff happen before. Quite funny actually.

kilburn2000 disagrees: how on earth can you possibly know that without having his URL?

Quite recently, there have been many reports of "artificially inflated backlink counts".

In other words: Google has been messing with us - and chances are they're still at it.

What does Yahoo! SiteExplorer say?

Maybe a link was added to the sig of forum profiles and that added a few thousand links, depending on the number of posts you have.

Examine your links and you yourself will figure out how and from where they're coming.

I would analyze the inbound links to the site to identify the problem. Those numbers are too high for it to be a case of human edited dirs finally getting around to your past submissions.

I thought you folks may want to hear that we determined our increase is attributed to social media coverage.

Due to the nature of our service, we have many, many people writing about us on facebook, twitter, blog posts, and blog badges or permanent blog links. While we've been encouraging our consumers to do this more and more over time, it appears that Google has been crawling the public pages and including them in their link graph more than ever before.

The analysis is not complete, but from what we can see thus far, it's truly unbelievable how much social media mentions/links have skyrocketed our SEO. My advice to share to the community is that social media links can and will have an enormous impact on your SEO performance so make sure you have a proactive strategy for it.

Thx!
Kristen
PS- I was wrong about the 4x increase in links. It's actually 7x. Really.
