    Selling text links?

I just received an email from someone intersted in purchasing text links. I am really hoping its not from someone from this forum because I hate to talk about someone in front of them. I get a lot of visitors to my site from here so it could be. Anyway this person offered to purchase text links on all my pages. If I were to put their links on the bottom of my pages. I guess they resell them and this person said that he could get several text link advertisers for me. I am really not sure how I feel about this. I could use the money but I don't know if this is a good idea or a bad idea and am not even sure how this would work. What do you think?

Never sold links yet. How do you charge for this.

You can get in S*** if you get caught. Will it drain lots of your PR. If he happens to get penalized by G for selling PR or links, you endup linking to bad neighborhood... and on and on...

Lots of IF that only you can figure if you should.

There's nothing wrong with selling ADVERTISING SPACE on your site, be it a text link or a banner ad. You just have to make sure that there is no hint whatsoever that you are selling pr.

    Thanks for the input

I didn't know that you couldn't sell links. I think I am going to think about it for a bit and do some researching on his site. Thanks for your help as always.

No, no, I didn't say you couldn't sell text links. you absolutely CAN! It is just another form of advertising. All I'm saying is that you must absolutely be sure that you don't place some text on your site somewhere that says, "hey buy PR here now". PR is the keyword there.

If you have Adsense on any of your pages you are selling their product. As long as it is thought of taking on ads I don't see a problem. Just have to make sure none of the links are to bad neighborhoods. You have to control the links. If not, you may get into a big load of sh..

    Smile Okay thanks

I am considering it. I could make enough money to pay for my site and some if I did this so I am thinking about it. He did send me a link to one site that is working with him. I have heard of them. It is a reputable site. It has a PR of 8 too. I can't find info on his particular site for some reason but I can't see why a site that has a PR of 8 would use this if it weren't some what legit.

    Hi,

I am selling text ads on a website, but I would never sell PR.
Selling ads is ok by Google, but selling PR is bad.

You could say the two are the same thing, and you are right.

    Good luck.

(I guess this post did not help much.) 8-)

talk about paranoid... what's wrong with selling advertising space? It won't "drain lots of your PR", unless you only have 2 links on your site, one pointing to your home page, and another one pointing to the other site. Most of the PR gets funneled through your own site, and only a bit gets out to the site you are advertising.
Anyway, it is only a PR4 site, I don't think they are interested in buying PR, maybe just want to get some backlinks.

Oh... well, it depends of many factors: how much traffic do you get, how long has the site been online, what PR does it have, where will the link be placed, how many outbound links does the page have, etc... a PR6 link can be worth $20 or $150, it all depends of these factors. You need to do some serious investigation about prices so you don't get screwed. There are several places that sell or "auction" links, one of them has a huge banner at this forum.
