Another question - Should the link's base page content be relevant to link's anchor text or to my page content?

But what is really questionable for me it is the role of content quality or relevance of the page (site) where the link is put and the page to which the link links.
"Questionable" links are "put"... the highest quality links are earned.

Should the link's base page content be relevant to link's anchor text or to my page content?
The "trust" earned by the site that awards the link is more important than relevance.

The Pope has tons of links from churches, libraries and government agencies. He has lots of PR8 internal pages. If your competitor gets a link from the Pope you are in trouble.

Ah, but I meant the other G!

    • terriwells agrees : As a historian by education I can say this: it depends on the Pope, the drunks, and whose version of G we're talking about...;-)
    • EGOL agrees : oh... I think that G would prefer the Pope. :)

About Pope... When I earn the link from the good site (like the Pope's one) but from not very good page from this site it really doesn't move my site forward. So may be otherwise is better.

I haven't read all the sticky threads here either.

If there's more that 400 words - I tends to say to myself "I'll read it in my spare time"... but unfortunately, I sleep in my spare time.

...I write my thoughts on SEOAssur.

Philip has done good work... From my point linkbuilding is the most difficult side of SEO, it is almost art. Good set of theory and experience...

Since the First Vatican Council of 1870, the Pope has no bad pages (by dint of papal infallibility)!

Buy several thousand links all with the same highly targeted anchor text in short order and there's a chance they might get filtered.

I don't do SEO for other people, my income is from my own sites or those I have a financial interest in.

For full disclosure I do own a minority interest in a company that provides wholesale SEO services.

Phil you've made a good synopsis about the nature of web linking. What I would've preferred to see would be more tactics on how to acquire those links and your 5 posts wrapped up into a summary of 1 post.

For those who don't know, SEOAssur.com is Fathom's blog and is well worth reading.

Fathom, while I have you here, would you share your thoughts on backlinks' relevance to the target site? Is it important? And what is link relevance? E.g. do the on-page attributes of the linking page (title, context) matter at all? Some of use have been debating this, to no agreement here and elsewhere, to no agreement.
