In this example the keyword is shoes.

change the keyword (shoes) to your keyword or words.

Link pages are usually low quality and spammy, especially for shopping terms, very obvious unnatural links.

I know what your saying. Some are low quality and some aren't.
You need to do a little work, it's a way to find them.

It a way to find other sites that are relevant and might link to other sites.
Which is just what it is...a 'way' to find them.
Then one must go through these sites and see what might be a good link and what might not.
You can also replace the word links with resources to find even more sites.
IMO the sites that come up on page 1 and 2 are more than likely not low quality but the most authoritative sites out there that have links or resources to lets say 'shoes'. Sites on deeper pages..say 3-4 through 10 could very well could be low quality and spammy.

is that low quality or spammy?
Here's another one for the word Beauty

I wouldn't say either one of those are low quality or spammy...almost on the spammy, but they would pass my test.
But that's my opinion, you might find them spammy and of low quality.

Unless you have a quality site that is some kind of resource they aren't going to link out to you.

If you did have a quality site that was a real resource you would hope they would write a piece about you and share that with their visitors.. rather than stick you on a links page that only SEO's hunting for poor quality and obviously unnatural links are going to see.

Re-read the original post.
It doesn't say you'll be able to get every link nor does it say they are all high quality or spammy or not.
It's a Way To Find Related or Relevant Sites.
Now getting a link from the results whether spammy, low quality or top notch will depend on how much effort you put in to it.
Again this is where you'll need to do a little work.

On a side note..I recall you saying you received an unnatural link notice from Google....How did that ever happen with your way of thinking?

I assume because someone filed a spam report.. and I had obvious paid links so it was a successful one, and this happened because a year ago I didn't know as much as I know now.

I was also doing article marketing last year for a different site, that got hit by panda eventually.

I would consider link page links as unnatural as article marketing or obvious paid links.. last year I might have thought it was a great idea though.

Just kidding. It's always good to have a debate. I can see both sides of the argument here, but I think test-ok has some good points.

For example, I typed in the following:
intitle:"real estate" inurl:"links"

And came across this page:

That's not what I would call a reciprocal linking "you link to me and I'll link to you" type of page. It is truly a good resource of links. Now, granted, the PR of this page is only 2 and there are a lot of links on it so the juice that would come to my site is not much. But still, it would be a relevant link if I could get one. Plus, I found this page after 30 seconds of searching. If I looked a little harder then I could find higher PR pages to get links from.

What I did next was run the "check my links" chrome extension on this page and boom - there are 22 broken links.

I could then email the owner of this site and say, "Hey, you've got some broken links on this site. I'd be happy to show you which ones. And could I be bold enough to suggest that you add this page from my site on your list?" In order to do that I'd have to have an incredible piece of content on my site.

Or, I could do this. One of the 404's was to century21.com/learn. The description was "articles related to different loan alternatives". I used the wayback machine (archive.org) to find the page that used to exist there. I can now recreate the page on my site. Or, better yet, create an even better page on loan alternatives. Then, I can suggest that the site owner replaces the broken link with my site.

Next, I go to ahrefs and see that there are 16 sites linking to that broken page. Now I have 16 other sites to email to suggest my site.

This is a great way to get links. I've done it. It takes some work and you get a lot of non responses and also you get people saying, "Thanks so much!" but they don't link to you. But when you do get the link it is awesome. I got 2 of these last week. Plus the resource I created draws in relevant traffic to my site and will keep gathering links in years to come.

But, I would caution people to avoid low quality links pages, especially ones that look like they were created for the purpose of reciprocal links.

You don't need the commands by the way, just searching with quotes does the job

"real estate" "resources" "edu"

or

"real estate" "resources" "gov"

Including .gov or edu etc obviously avoids the spam more.. also you can drop the resources.

I assume your advice was aimed at people who aren't that knowledgeable.

So your advising them to try and get links from link pages?.

99.9% of link pages are just spammy attempts at manipulating ranks.. the last place you want links from really and I'm not sure average newcomer SEO will be able to recognise that.

If I'm trying to sell shoes, what good will a link on a links page do me? surely I would want a editorial piece.

It was terrible advice because it's too unspecific.

Buying links can work out well if done correctly, but just saying "buy links" is bad advice.
