How does buying text links work?

How does buying a text link work? So let say you pay $100 for a PR6 (just an example) text link....so do they put your site link on their PR6 page? I wouldn't imagine me putting their link on my site...

can anyone give me more details...?

now onto the good or bad of buying text links...i've heard that it is too risky to purchase links because of link farms and such....and that it is difficult to tell....therefore it is best to just stick with reciprocal linking...

    what do you guys think?

of course they'll put your ilinks on PRX page if you paid for. Beside buying text links aren't good ideas in general. there're other risks - fake PR, some pages don't pass PR etc.

when you rent links you usually do not link back.

reciprocal links are usually more likely to be link farms than most bought links from what I have seen, although farms exist in various forms for various purposes.

I rent / buy a good number of links, and I don't see it as a bad thing. I think where people run into problems is when they don't augment one link building method with others.

    because everything has a cost.

trading links, for example, can hurt your longterm site reputation if done on a broad scale with sites that are unrelated.

the best part of one way links is they can not hurt, coz if they could hurt, everybody would be acquiring links for the competitors.
