    Broken Subdomain Links

I had a question that I am hoping for a somewhat clear cut answer. I m working on a web site, which is managed by a single
    stakeholder.

There are upwards of 30 subdomains, managed independently of the main www website. There's plenty to read on how
Google assumes the relationship between these, and has stated that subdomains are treated like subdirectories anyway.

So, is this the case just for clustered results? I ask because the main www site has no internal, inbound or outbound broken
links - very healthy. However, the subdomains are riddles with them. So does poor site health on a subdomain have any impact on the www?
They certainly have different metrics like DA, PA etc......

Could you add a source for this, from what I know subdomains are treated as different domains (websites). This is one of the reasons subdomains have been used to recover from certain Google penalties.

There's a few references which allude to this:

Perhaps treated differently, but to what extent?
