What is the content/topic of the site? How often is that service/product search for via zip code? I'm willing to be hardly ever at all. How often is that service/product searched for via city? Maybe sometimes (depending on the service/product).

Personally, unless the product/service is regionally based, using zip codes and cities for keywords sounds like a lot of work for little (if any) results--not a good use of time.

The number of visitors you may get for a specific keyword (in your case zip code, city name) depends of the number of searches made for that keyword corelated with your site theme.

Personally I think that optimization for city name/state name is good, but for zip code useless... but of course it's just a point of view.
Comments on this post
expat agrees: The city name helps to focus the search, which is good, but I doubt if many people search using zip
code.

Bottom line is create ad groups/keywords for anything that can be related to the business and let the results tell you the answer.

We always recommend using phone numbers (very common for people to use) and addresses (also very common) especially if you have multiple locations, if I wanted to find the local business we commonly use the phone number or address.

Also when someone is doing a background check on a person or company they will use the address and phone number to find information so it look professional having your ad there also. (remember you don't pay unless someone clicks the ad, so being there is free)

As for zip codes, you actual question, we've not seen much value in it, since many are shared, but it might be something that can bring in 1 or 2 users and hay for the time it took you to read this post you could have added 5 digits to your keyword list.
