I once read an article by the creator of Wordtracker on why their keyword were better than the overture tool. It might be on their main website, but anyhow I think they pull there keywords from a wide range of smaller engines and then compile these results based on past and current keyword searches so that you get a good feel for the amount of searches and keyword combinations that occur daily, weekly, etc... But as a recall its very current data that makes what you see in the Wordtracker results better.

I believe Wordtracker data comes from metacrawler.com and dogpile.com (at least for the most part).

Wordtracker uses META data. Maybe they are pulling the data from what users enter into their META keywords. The more a word repeats throughout META keyword tags the more related it is.

META doesn't refer to content, rather a type of search engine.

Yes I know but META tags are used in META search engines for their searches and not content. Why would WordTracker need content details when all they need is the searches. They pull what people search for from META engines because they dont need fancy algos and such. They simply multiply the ratio between lets say metacrawler's traffic compared to Googles to show you an estimate between the engines. Most META tags have more than one word in their META tags that are slightly similar. For example:
10 sites all have "widget" "red widget" "blue widget" in their tags. Than Wordtracker assumes that these are related to each other. Also they get the logs and can see what a user also looked for when typed in certain keywords that are related. This is what i read from an article about a year ago so not makin' it up |

Maybe they use META data within the search engine, but that's not what makes them a meta search engine. Google could use META tags, but not be a meta engine.

they pull their data as far as search frequency from a couple meta search engines. they pull the related words data from commonly paired meta tag words I believe

So assuming that Google does not use META tags, does that mean it is a meta engine?!? ;-) alek |

to figure out related words it uses the meta keywords tag....
it tracks the traffic on dogpile and webcrawler (I believe), which are both meta search engines. it takes their past 30 or 60 days (i forget which it is) and uses that traffic and the percent of websearch those search engines power to estimate total web traffic. from there they can assume a certain percent for each of the major engines...its not a perfect science, but its one of the better messurements out there which does not cost honker mucho dollars... |
