Single Keywords
Hello
I have a busy site but 99% of my search keywords are two and three words long, i really would like to be listed high for one single word but im having no luck and not sure how to improve my listing place, at the moment im 78th from 1,270,000,000 but as most would know here that being placed 78th means nothing. Of course i would like to get listed higher with many other single words but the main one is much more important to what i sell and the info i offer. Any advice would be much great. |

More and better quality links using the term in your anchor text than any other site which targets that term. In the meantime keep targeting your longer 2/3/4 word phrases which contain the single word and it'll gradually help you reach the first page.
It takes a long time to reach the front page for a competitive single word search term. It's also often the case that when you do reach the first page you find out that though it may bring you more traffic, that traffic might well not convert nearly as well into sales as the longer, more precise searches.

Code:
This is anchor text The meta description will have no effect on your rankings. The title element will, but that alone won't be enough to help you rank for even a mildly competitive term, for that you also need links. Also, don't repeat the keyword in the title if it can be avoided -- it won't help you but instead will dilute the value of the other words. |

Yep, that's the idea. Say your page was about "FooBar Widgets", you'd look to gain back links to the page with FooBar and Widgets in the anchor text. What you need to do though is make sure that you vary the anchor text and use synonyms -- too many links all with the same anchor text looks unnatural and will lead to them being devalued.

Its really hard to compete for a single word KW. Just what you have said, you are competing with 1.27B other sites with the same KW. Try to compete with long-tail KWs. |

You're going to need:
1) Links 2) Links 3) Links 4) Links 5) Links and last but not least: 6) More Links!!!!!! Good luck!

It's all about the links...
It's nice to rank for single keywords, but it's worth bearing in mind that 2-3 word search terms are often more targeted and bring in higher quality traffic. |
