Generly speaking how long does a site take to get listed on the rankings for a hot keyword codersidering all things equal?

depends on the skill and effort level of the SEO. if it competitive generally at least 2 months is to be expected. it sometimes can be 6 months to a year.

It really depends on the popularity of the targeted term. I have been able to rank #1 for unpopular terms without any backlinks, but have been unable to get anywhere near the 1st page on competitive terms. What are you targeting?

No actually my pepper spray store does well with other search terms, just cant seem to crack the engines for the keyword pepper spray yet, i am about 500 now on google for that term

I got the same problem, top10 for many KWs, but only number 50 for my most important KW. It seems like Google prefers non-commercial sites.
