Keywords in URL vs. Short URL

I want to create new URLS for my e-commerce company, and I'm not sure which is better: keeping the URL short or having a more optimized keyword.

For example, should I pick BRANDNAME-cabinet-hardware.php or BRANDNAME-hardware.php?

Clearly, with including the word cabinet gets another keyword in there. But leaving it out, makes it shorter (and is shorter sweeter)?

Thanks for the advice!

keywords in titles don't add very much to your overall optimization efforts. If anything for the sake of clarity include your keywords but maybe in sub folders?

BRANDNAME/cabinet/hardwarename.php

I like short and sweet.

There is nothing wrong with the suggestion of using sub directories. Personally I like to keep a flat "top level" file structure and would use the keyword to name the file.

You have to look at exactly what your page is about. If your document title has the word cabinet in then you should include it.

If it makes the URL stupidly long then don't use the full title. Your titles and file names should be reasonably concise.

In reality you will see very little difference between the two options you mention.

I would prefer brandname-cabinet-hardware.php, but if it is too long, just cut it short..

URL should be short, its good if you use a brand name in your URL but should be meaning full and easy memorable for customer and general public.

Domain names and the keywords do make a difference but think about this:

Google.com
Yahoo.com
MSN.com

They all probably rank in the top 5 in any search engine for the keyword "search engine". So you can easily brand yourself and promote your site to rank for keywords even if your site doesn't have those keywords in the domain.

I'd say the shorter - the better.
