Keyword Targeting or Splatter Effect!
Chosing the right keywords or keyphrases to assist your site in ranking well in search engines is not what it use to be.
You are what you are is a good analogy for keyowrding today. A web site or even a single specific web page can only be what it is no matter how many "keywords" you add beyond its current self. Therefore keyword selection starts with the text copy and the way that copy is arranged on the page top left to bottom right. If you have a current web page the easiest way to see how a search engine will intrepret your text copy - open the page up in a browser > select edit from the browser menu > select all > copy > open a text editor up > and paste. Now how coherent and how relevant are the first words on the page. If these are about us, contact us, products, support it is likely this first terms on the page will reduce your web page's ranking effectiveness, and you should attempt to re-design these terms to something much more "market need" focused. What would my market use as a word or phrase to have an opportunity to find me. Basically this is keyword targeting. Although effective today - as I started this post "you are what you are". Splatter Effective - although there are many methods to help determine a targeted keyword it is far better to start by post your site "as is" and seeing how well and what terms materialize directly from visitors clicking into your site. Some search engines users will search very deep into results and likely find you, click through and the referral is captured in a logfile which you can analysis > see the term used and from what search engine. Obviously if you check your ranks and find the page to be very depth in results - it stands to reason that improving this particular page's ranks for that keyword (or phrase) will produce more. Why? Saving time! No matter how hard you try to determine the best targeted keywords for your site / page(s) the likelihood that you will find all the best keywords to rank each page on is extremely difficult. Competitiveness of a word/phrase and the search engine algorithm are a double unfathomable variable - thus spending time attempting to rank on any word/phrase immediately is usually met with disappointment. Splatter effect basically says - rank on the terms you can rank on the earliest to provide some return now - and work towards an ascending order of targeted terms as they appear in your logfiles. Good Luck
