Hello all
I am trying to promote my website. After going through the perfectly written comments in this forum, i have learnt few things about web site promotion. Thanks all. I used the wordtracker tool to analys few of the keywords which are relevant to my business. I went forward with the analysis of two keywords. For first its gave a KEI of 37.690 and for the other it came out with 0.001 I would like to add that both the keywords were very much relevant with my site. Should i dump the lower ranking one and take up a thesaurus to find new words? regards and thanks |

Hi and welcome to SEOChat,
It is a very good idea to start with keyword research. Keyword research is the most important part of a successful SEO-project. Focus on the right keywords and your website will get quality traffic. Wordtracker is a nice tool, but do not trust the KEI. Some keywords return a lot of results when you search for it, but doesn't really have a lot of real competition. Other keywords return only a fewer results, but the competition could be at an absurd level. When you have made your first list of keywords, check the SERPS, try to get a feel for what kind of how much time and money that would be needed to get a spot high enough to be worthwhile. When you have done this talk try to figure out what keywords that best would convert into customers, you could get a pretty good picture of this by running a PPC campain. Do your own analysis and then hire one or more SEO firms to do an independent analysis. You might have to go through this cycle more then one time. Do not forget possible four, five and six word frases. The more words in a frase the lower competition, and higher convertion rate. You could make a lot of extra sales by targeting a phrase that is rarly searched for, but the has a high convertion rate. I am doing work for a business that just have moved into the US marked for some very high competition products, and we have made them a lot of money focusing on low traffic, multiple word keyword phrases. They are very happy since they do not have to spend an extra $7.000 a month on links. Their web site is also moving up on the lesser targeted keyword phrases since the site was constructed using the "EGOL tree" (a VERY strict tree structure). I recommed reading through all his posts and to study every pice of advice he gives.

north arkansas bass fishing lakes
I am sorry for being unclear.
Many users are searching with more than one keyword. fishing - one word phrase (not very targeted) bass fishing - two word phrase arkansas bass fishing - three word phrase arkansas bass fishing lakes -four word phrase north arkansas bass fishing lakes -five word phrase (more targeted) You could spend a lot of time and money going for the one word phrase fishing while you might get a lot more quality traffic if you go for one of the search phrases with more words, and most importantly you will spend less money to get the visitors you need to make a sale of some kind. Try it out in any search engine. Last edited by sorvoja : September 24th, 2004 at 05:36 AM. Reason: better example |

Within my industry we are high ranked for the most competitive phrase (6thin google, 1 in yahoo and msn. We are also high ranked for some secondary phrases. 1 in google.
We get roughly the same traffic from google for the 2 phrases and they convert equally. We are similarly high ranked for other secondary phrases. It is worthwhile to compete in some of the less competitive keyword phrases just as Sorvoja pointed out and as EGOL has often mentioned. Dave |

I think narrowing down on keywords is a bit of a process.
For instance initially you could start with wordtracker and overture to focus on some phrases that you think are most appropriate. Both tools will also give you altenative phrases similar to the main phrases you choose. You could work your way through the adwords tools. This has lots of phrases that are searched on that are similar to the main phrases you chose. You might want to look at your competitors sites and see what phrases they have highlighted in their meta descriptions and keywords and titles. Then check the serps for those keywords. There are a growing number of tools that look at the direct level of competitiveness for keyword phrases. Our friend Randfish, here at SEO chat, has developed one of them. Check out his signature link. My experience is you will get sharper on this over time as you keep focusing on terms and phrases. In our experience...time helped a lot. We focused on what were obvious main phrases...and over time learned (through a variety of ways) more phrases that applied to our single service. Good luck. Dave |
