Why would you ask this here when you already got an answer in another thread? Read Fathom's link. He knows what he is talking about.

Yes this is useless.
Because most of people do not use this Tag in Right way..they are using this to promote their rankings in unethical ways ...like they stuff it with large no. keywords or dense their competitive keywords so much. Nowadays SEs start considering them as spamming and they consider lot more other On page fators to calculate SERPs, so Meta Keywords do not help in SERPs in GOOGLE only. Other Search Engines still consider them .

Let's clear a few things up... Meta [all including description and keyword] are useless for enhancing meaningful ranks... But don't confuse that with having no impact at all. All Search engine still use Meta Description for ordered ranks... but it is "WAY DOWN THE VARIABLE LIST (of 200 for Google). Some people claim "every little bit helps" and as such use the Meta Description - based on that philosophy... and that is a perfectly validate opinion because you can have a page listed at #900 (without a Meta Description) and by adding it... you can jump up to #500... a WHOPPING JUMP of #400 positions! ...unfortunately these are not meaningful ranking achievements -- a Meta Tag with not help you get into the top 30 positions for anything other than non-sense terms like "test-to_see-the_meta-description_rank-ew432897432yfd3df23yh" -- where no vailid traffic for conversions is ever received. SO... All search engines use META DESCRIPTIONS within their algorithms for ordered ranks... AND ...Metas are useless for achieving top ranks on competitive and moderately competitive phrases and rarely useful for achieving top ranks on obscure longtail phrases. NOTE: ACHIEVING TOP RANKS on the former is the purpose of SEO... not just any ranks on any 'never searched for phrase'... and this is why you see so many varying opinions... 1 camp is interested only in "every little bit counts" and the other camp is only interested what gets you to #1.

I think meta tags that you can insert into your web pages to provide search engines with information about your pages so that is important to use meta tags for easy searching ur site.
