Important of keyword in domain name

Hi all.

I hoped this is the right section to ask this question. If not, let me know where to go please.

I am deciding on a domain name for a business supply hearing services. Can anyone tell me if search engines give weights to keywords appearing in a domain name or not please. Since Google is the most popular search engine at the moment, I am leaning this question toward it, however I have not posted this question in the Google forum because I want to know if other search engines give weight to the keywords in the domain name.

Thanks in advance.

Minh

yes, google does. some other SE's probably do as well, but I wouldn't be able to give you a list.

you should note that part of the "bonus" awarded isn't direct- if your name is www.blue-widgets.com, people will generally link to you with the anchor text "blue widgets" and this will also boost your SERPs for "blue widgets," even though it's not a direct bonus from the domain name itself.

All search engines give some weights to keywords in URL (a domain name is part of URL), but the weight in keywords in URL changes over time. The trend is that weight will be less.

I think it is bordering on zero importance. Good site design, with SEO in mind, along with a good text anchored backlink campaign greatly outweighs any imagined help in the area of having keywords in the domain name. Also, good luck in getting a domain name that has a memorable keyword as the domain name. Basically all non-gibberish domain names are either on the Web or reserved already. Keywords in your various page URL's are a different story. They can and should be keyword specific (I wish I would have done this when I first designed my site).

"Basically all non-gibberish domain names are either on the Web or reserved already."

Actually not quite true. I have purchased 35 really great brandable, memorable, nonhypenated .com keyword domains in the past month that I have listed on my 5 Star Domains for Sale site. I find tons of good ones all the time that I don't have time to register. It's still easy to find good KW names if you know how and have the right tools.

And I do find that all other SEO techniques and PR being equal, the KW in the domain helps with relevance, especially with Google. Important though for customers that you find KW names that are still short and sound like a brand and not just a funky KW string like buybluewidgetshere.com

I'm thinking of starting a service where I can help people find good domains but don't know what I would charge or if anyone would be interested.

Thanks for all your help people. The domain name I wanted is available with and without the keywords in the domain name.

I understand that other things are more important than having keywords in the domain name, such as getting lots of incoming links but for a startup website, any help should not be wasted.

Regards
Minh
