High ranking keywords, very low visits

Hi there, I'm fairly new to SEO (although I've learned a lot in the past few months), and I have a question.

We've worked hard to get a decent ranking for the phrase 'mens leather shoes'. We're 3rd or 4th on Google's first page, and this keyword phrase has a monthly search volume of about 60-80k.

We're hardly getting any visits for this, about 13 in the last month.

We're very confident that our analytics software is tracking properly - could anyone suggest a reason why our visit count is so low?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide,
Cheers
Simon

I would suggest you check your numbers.

i'm seeing that 'phrase' as only having 21900 a month. Its a lot higher as a broad search.

the second is the level of competiton.

Intitle competition is 561000 sites vs only 30000 for pages.

If you look at all the other variants of keywords they have 400000 competing pages.

To try and help the number one site can expect around 9000 clicks a month.

I forget the numbers but no.1 makes up 70%+ of clicks.

Finally if your site is ranking on its primary page then your probably 6th place.

If your site is higher make sure analytics is set up for the page ranking.

hope that helps

Googles Adwords keyword tool is showing the volumes that you suggest.

Are you logged in to Google (i.e. if you have a Google email account) because if you do so Google will always rank your site much higher for you than it will for other visitors. In may cases it can mean the difference from being in top 25 to not ranking in top 1000.

You can disable this boost Google gives you by signing out of Google.

Hi and thanks for the replies.

Yes, ensured we're not logged into Google, and also made a point of clearing my browser cache and cookies to remove any personal search preferences that Google may or may not set.

We're having a meeting with the guys who do our SEO and our analytics soon, and this is something we're going to bring up with them. As Dan says, position one gets 70%+ of the clicks - this could well be the reason.

Thanks again for all your suggestions,
Simon
