Choosing keywords for a new site

I'm having a hard time grasping how to choose keywords for a new site i've build. Let's say I build a site on dogs which is a highly competitive term. How do I know what keywords to optimize for to start off ? At what point do I start optimizing for "dogs" or will that come naturally .. or do I try optimizing for "dogs" right off the bat. I'm a little confused when it comes to choosing keywords to optimize for.

Well there is nothing to be confused when it comes to selection of keywords, just search for the Google keywords tool and use that free service provided by Google for the keywords optimizing.
Best of Luck..!!

You wouldn't do dogs, you would do something you specialize in with dogs. Then you'd write content you already think is interesting and you've identified a need for in the online industry of dogs. Then you see what types of keywords you get from your own traffic. From those trends build more content and get more links thereby expanding your empire of dogs. You can try third party keyword engines but they all have the same data and it's not accurate. Google adwords will give you a quick impression of keyword searches too.....

That's right. All you have to do, just type your phrase to Google Keyword Tool. This is very useful tool. Just choose the most search phrase.

while the accuracy of Wordtracker is debate laden, what is not, is knowing 'how' Wordtracker works and what the formulas mean within their time thresholds. THAT's where everyone who uses that app, complains and whines....

use G. period. no 'understanding' the formulas is needed....
