What is the process you take to find out which keywords you should use in your site?

For example, If i wanted to find the optimal keywords for my site what is the procedure? Do I go to my biggest competitors site if we are selling the same service? Then what

site suggestions would be a plus as well to find out where the best place to go to track keywords.

Thanks in advance!!

Go to http://www.freekeywords.wordtracker.com . Put in your niche there . Lets say Your product is coffee . Just put coffee keyword there and then expand on to your research.

Yeah wordtracker and a few others are all we got left...Damn yahoo/overture for taking your tool away!!!!

I suppose you can always the use the adwords tool by G. That will give you some insight as well. The higher the bid per click the better (more competitive/likely higher $ potential) the KW.

Use keyword tools.
Spy on your competitors.
Use the Google Adwords Tool.
Go to forums and blogs in your niche and look closely at frequent topics.
Set up an Adwords campaign for a week for some selected keywords and examine the amounts of traffic.

The methods above should be able to provide you with quite a list of keywords and some estimates of which keywords could be useful to target.

During this process, remember to take a close look at the competition for your keywords as well. It will often generate more traffic to begin targeting some less-competitive keywords, while building a good position for some more competitive ones.

In addition, if you already have a site up and running, remember to look closely at your stats to see which obscure keywords are already bringing you traffic. Often you increase your traffic quickly by improving your ranking on such keywords.
