    PPC for keyword research

    I'm sure I won't suprise many with this, but I don't see an existing thread on the topic.

    Keyword research tools will give a good idea of traffic, related keywords and such, but they won't tell you how your site will actually perform for certain keywords or phrases. How many of you use PPC to complement your keyword research?

    1. Analyze keyword performance in current PPC campaigns to see which keywords and phrases lead to higher CTR and/or conversions. Give more weight to these keywords in your copy by, for example, placing your best performing keywords in titles and header tags.
    2. Use broad match to find new keywords. Actual people searching come up with stranger search terms than a keyword tool can, and you will see which strange phrases perform for you. Can be costly.
    3. Analyze ad performance to see which texts and calls to action people respond to most (free shipping, personalization, blog content,...) and use that to improve your content strategy and on-site copy.

    The great thing with PPC are the quick results. A/B testing on-site will give you more accurate results but takes more time and effort. Performance in organic and paid results should not be considered identical, but they can certainly be used to complement eachother.

    Use your competitors' ads as an indicator. Look at their headlines as they likely are written to match user query.
