    Potential Keyword Penalty?

Before I begin, I need to state the all so popular "I am new at this so don't kill me" line

I have a question regarding if I would get "penalized" by Google if I had a few keyword/keyphrases that were variations of my competitor's site?

I have done some keyword research and found out that there are a few variations of my competitor's site name that get search a ton and don't bring up a lot of results. I would like to include those keywords in my meta description as well as extra keywords for article marketing (where the main keyword would be something legitimate). I hope that makes sense.

Any and all advice would be most welcome.

    thanks

Google won't penalize you for that, but your competitors may do that if a keyword you want to use is a registered trademark. Unlikely too, though.

Also check for duplicate content - you don't want your site to be treated by Google as a mirror of your competitor's site.

Yeah I don't think this site has any copyright issues. I guess I will try it and see what happens. Thanks for the insight.

I don't think there are any 'rules' but I feel thats a bad 'route' to go down.

There should not be any need to copy you competion.

Look at what they are doing and do it 20 times better. If you sell blue widgets become the best source of info for blue widgets, have the best content on blue widgets, have the best links on blue widgets, etc

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers Joe

Joe, you are right at that point. Using competitor's name is not unlawful (in terms of jurisprudence), but it is still a bad practice. It hurts your karma.
