You'd obviously want the keyword with higher volumes of traffic and less competition. The trick is to try and rank for more than just 1 specific keyword or phrase. Try to target specific web pages rather than just the domain name when choosing keywords. You'd be surprised how much easier it is to rank a web page that is actually relevant to a keyword or phrase. ;)

Senseless question. Is it good to be rich and healthy or should I be sick and poor instead?

The question would have some sense if it was asked as: high traffic and competition VS low traffic and competition. The answer for the question in its the original form is obvious.

if the question is correct then take less competitive and high traffic.

I don't think its correct.. combine the competitive word with some other word like web hosting services is a high competitive keyword if i combine this with web hosting services India competition reduces, it has less search volume. Now you have two keywords targeted.

Of course, keyword that has less competition but has high traffic is better to target.

Firstly, why dont you target both?

Second, I would give some consideration to which is more relivant to your site. Try to choose the term that will result in the most amount of sales. There is very little point in driving a high volume of traffic to your site if it does not convert.

I would suggest running a small add campaigne on google for 10 days or so. This way you can track things like CTR, bounce rate and conversion rate and choose the term that is going to drive the most amount of sales.

I would rather have 10 visitors a day and make 6 sales than 100 visitors a day and make none

Trial and error my friend. Test them both and whichever is bringing you the best return in the end, that's the one you choose.

That's only two variables. What kind of traffic do you want ?

Low, but targeted traffic might be more desirable than generic high traffic. Especially if you are selling something.

When it comes to choosing keywords, I usually take what the best or most searched term is and then look at some that I could actually get #1 ranking with easily and then take some right in the middle of those 2 to focus on. Did that make since?

    Keywords

I always try to choose keywords with high search volume and low competition, although I will consider a good keyword with high competetition if I think it's worth it. I don't usually pay a lot of attention to the CCP because almost all of the traffic to my sites is free. If you ask me, why pay for tarffic if I can drive it to my sites for free.

    Keywords

I should also mention the value using long tail keywords. This can help you get very targeted traffic to your sites. They are very specific, they help you weed out the vague searches that people make that may be to broad in scope, and people searching with long tails are looking for specific items or information. Hope this helps. Peace.
