Exact keyword OR longtail keyword ???

When choosing a keyword, which is best?

Ex. going for the keyword "Dallas auto repair"

Dallas auto repair or Dallas auto repair shop ?

I've done this in another market and ranked for the "shop" keyword version but very bad position for the shorter version.

I assumed that the search results would pull up the long version, since all the words were included.

I go with the longtail keywords because they will bring you a very targeted traffic that produce higher conversion rates and a higher return on investment.

I agree with you. Because long tail keywords are more specific and can brings leads for a business. For example "weight loss" have got a huge monthly search volume but "weight loss products" is more specific than that. If you choose "Buy Effective weight Loss product", it will be more effective because this search term is performed by the people who wants ot buy weight loss product.

Start with the longtail keywords and work towards more competitive exact keywords.
