Which are currently the best tools for Keyword-research?

Is Market Samurai still the best?
Should I invest in purchasing Market Samurai, or are there currently some free tool that is equally good, or some other non-free product that is better?

I haven't used Market Samurai, but I use colibritool (Colibri | SEO TOOLS to monitor and improve traffic from search engines) for keyword research and monitoring some other seo stuff. They probably have some free trial so I think you can try it.

My tools I use for basic keyword research are

Google Adwords keyword tool - its great, make sure to select exact match to see exactly how many people are searching for your keywords. This tool will even give you an idea of what times during the year the keyword peaks.

Keyword Difficulty Tool SEOMOZ - This is a paid tool but this gives you an idea of how difficult it will be to rank for a particular keyword by analyzing the top 10 results.

Microsoft Excel - this is where the magic happens, all the analysis and breakdown and all the dirty work that goes into choosing the right keywords. I use a ton of Excel plugins like SEOTools from Excel and ASAPI Utilities.

I use screaming frog SEO Spider and it will crawl a site and return broken links, redirects, error codes, Titles, descriptions, links ect.

From time to time I use others link SpyFu, OpenSiteExplorer, and a couple internal ones I can't name.

I have tried lot's of paid and free tools for keyword research. But finally I feel that Google Adwords are best tool for searching best keywords for your business. Business understanding are also very important task for keyword research.

One reason purchasing a tool for keyword research (and I love SEMRush) is because you can type in a URL and get all the keywords that URL is ranking for. So this means you can get all the keywords your competition is ranking for.

SEMRush allows you to enter a "base" keyword and get keyword suggestions, "related" keywords.

You can view graphs of they keywords that you and 4 competitors are using - which ones are in common, etc.

SEOmoz, SEMRush, etc are all tools that offer things that Google Adwords tool can't.
