styles.css excluded in robots.txt

i am achieving a bad performance for my new site.

it has been crawled by deepcrawl bot and i am in with the new update.

i have PR 5 and i can say half of the links pointing to me contain my keyword phrases.

my optimization is good.

i am just making guesses for the reason of my bad performance:
1. i can be because of styles.css which I excluded by robots.txt. I know Darrin wrote this once, and he said he didnt have any problems.

2. although my all site is crawled and my PR is calculcated, maybe google is not using the latest PR for new sites. i am just wishing this absurd thing, because i have tried my best hoping to be in top10.

3. i may be in a strange ban situation because of a exploit in the algorithm or something, my PR and optimiation cannot make sense with my current position ~40.

Can you throw us a URL so that we can take a peep at the page in question?

I don't think that having you stylesheet named in the robots.txt exclude file will effect ranking in any way.

If you do feel this however then you can look at 2 possible solutions.

1. Rename this .css file to something like style.js, then update the links pointing to it so that they reflect the new extension. From what I know the file does not really need a .css extension so long as the correct modified extension is included in the tag, etc:



2. You could stick your stylesheet in a sub-folder on your website and ban the folder in the robots.txt file instead of naming the StyleSheet directly, this way it would be much harder for search engines to determine that you are banning your .css file.

Might like to try a combination of those ideas!

you are still defining type="text/css". so SEs will still know that it's not a javascript include but a css file.

remove XX while typing url. i would not like to have links from a seo forum. there is no evidence that i'll hurt, but just wanna play it safe.

i removed the exclusion of css from robots.txt, but you can still access it as styles.css in root.

so, what do you think is the reason?
unfortunately, i see no valid reason.

my main keyword is 'cyprus hotels'.

But you might look at No 1 - it has cyprus hotels in the text on google a number of times - we have the same with one of our pages for large yachts - the term large yacht is repeated countless times and yet it hasn't been hammered by google - quite the opposite!

i updated my robots.txt file last month to disallow indexing of the stylesheet, and it hasn't had any negative affect on my rankings in this last dance - everything is either at the level it was before, or has moved up since last month.

besides my belief about google crawling this page, I also do not want competitors to discover what SEO means by looking at backward links.

this may sound selfish, but in fact when you think that every person in top 10 know what search engine optizamition meant, then this would have been really hard.

i am not really worried about my hotel page, because it's not for a client but for myself. so, no big deal! just curious about my position.

right now, it is more important for me to learn the reason of having this bad performance than having a high ranking.
