Pop Up Script Being Blocked
Hi all!
I'm using Aweber's pop-up script to collect opt-ins to my newsletter. Unfortuneately, the Google Toolbar Pop-Up Blocker blocks the Aweber script - thus no pop-up. I've seen other webpages that automatically turn the pop-up blocker off so that the script can function. Is there some sort of code to install that turns the pop-up blocker off once the page initially loads? thanks! |

Speaking strictly from the point of view of a web surfer...if I'm using a pop-up blocker, and I haven't enabled pop-ups to a web site, I get annoyed if I get pop-ups from the site. Have you considered adding a note to the page that lets the user know they need to allow a pop-up for that page if they're signing up for the newsletter? Just my two cents.

That would be pretty hard to do if my traffic is coming from a blog/forum signature or from PPC.

Unfortunately that's the nature of popup blockers: they do block popups and don't provide you with a method to stop them doing so.
Have you considered an alternative method for achieving what you want? The javascript based suckerfish pseudo popup that rises from the bottom of the page as introduced by sitepoint.com is an excellent compromise. It does attract the attention of the user, but it's not in-your-face, and neither does it block page content from site. It's also unlikely to be blocked as it's part of the existing page and not a newly spawned one. Good for the webmaster and good for the end user. Popups are as likely to put people off your site altogether as they are to result in new newsletter subscribers.
