Mod Rewrite for IIS & ASP

I've heard all about the advantages of using the mod rewrite feature to help with page indexing in google with the mod rewrite for php, but what about IIS and ASP? I am from the microsoft world of web programming and I have had difficulty finding info on a similar tool for IIS web servers and using ASP. Can anyone tell me where I can look and more specifically what to look for a mod rewrite counterpart that I can use in a Microsoft web environment?

I've read that there are similar hacks for ASP but I can't seem to find out what my options are.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Check out IIS ReWrite or
ISAPI ReWrite.

There are possibly other methods as well.

Gringo.

IIS Rewrite RULES!!!!

Check out some of the sites on my tag (still in development)
they all use IIS rewrite. This is excellent for ecommerce sites.

Instead of a 10 - 20 page site for my customer he now has over 400 pages why? he has 390 products. Image a customer with over 10,000 products. It's well worth the price. If you want some help let me know.

We use ISAPI Rewrite and love it. IT was easy for our host to set-up and because it can be used on the server or domain level, they were real willing to do it for us. They actually made it part of there offering just because it gave people all the same advantages of apache's mod-rewrite function. Another good thing about ISAPI Rewrite from a users standpoint is there excellent forum so you can get help with your rewrite rules.

I would recommend finding an alternative to ISAPIRewrite. I have been trying to get it to work for almost a year. While support responses are usually prompt (within a day), their answers are usually very curt and rude and rarely helpful. For example, a valid RegExp rule will fail to work and support will provide a new rule which does, but with no explanation of why one rule is correct and the other isn't.

Responses are filled with sarcasm and contempt, but never include any background

information on the solution. Support will stop responding after a few suggestions

fail. While it is easy to setup for simple applications, more complicated setups

require luck and seemingly magical solutions.

If the product worked as advertised, if the documentation was more thorough, and if

support was helpful without being rude, I would recommend this product. As it is, I suggest you look somewhere else.

I am a bit suspicious of your motivation for posting this. I just started using it and have found support to go much further than I would expect (even writing the code for your exact situation), and there is a ton of documentation.

People can judge easily enough for themselves and I have nothing against IIS Rewrite, I just think you are probably a bit biased.

Negatively biased, yes.

I am clearly biased, but obviously not FOR any one product. As I said, I am a current owner and user of ISAPIRewrite, so I am not plugging anything else. I am just relaying my (long) experience with Helicon support. I would love to have better support which enabled me to use the product that I purchased and that I have spent countless hours trying to implement. As you said, people can make up their own minds - I just wanted to provide my perspective. I really have no other agenda, other than possibly to motivate Helicon to provide better support and documentation. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate any other product that does what ISAPIRewrite claims to do (short of switching to Apache Web Server.)

Helicon also provides a support forum where you can post questions and get answers from other users. I have been using ISAPI Rewrite for some time with out any problems. Any time I have needed help, I went to the forum and got the help I needed.

I'm not sure what kind of support people expect after only paying $69.00 once for a product, but you got to realize that if you simply don't understand the technology you just bought at some point you become a waist of time/money and not a priority. Helicon probably should offer a support contract so you can pay to get help from them.

I really have not had a problem with ISAPIRewrite. Well, there was the initial day or so until I understood it, but not I just refer to my old stuff that has already worked and it's no problem .

Their forum was helpful I thought.. they could have say five pages of simple examples and explanations, perhaps they could work on their documentation a bit.

IIS rewrite

I also use IIS rewrite, and I too have found their documentation to be ambiguous. This is probably because English is not their native language. At the same time I have always found them willing to help and I do highly recommend the product
