Ive never seen this before but I've seen it on one of our competitors websites..

Does it assist or improve any SEO ranking?

As far as I know it is more wasted space, most of the major SE's do not read he meta data, and if they do read it would be very little weight, I guess it goes to the website owner if you want to add it or not.

When you do a search it shows *title* and somrtimes your *description* meta, but I have never seen *abstract* visable when doing a search.

This list is far too much to be putting on your site, IMO

I don't even know what 50% or more of these mean.

But to answer your question does "absract" help...I doubt it would help as much as you think it would...there is no magical meta tag that will get you to the top of the listings.

My "GUESS" is thay have more links, higher keyword usage, higher visablity. the list goes on, I cannot speculate what someone else ratings are just because they or anyone else uses meta tags, IMO this is not where thwey are getting their ranking.
