Meta name?
Hi guys
I am doing link exchange and I come across a few site that they ask me to put a metatag in my link page. Something like I follow: <meta name="ultimateliving" content="0.0.1.2.31.1"> What does it means? Who does it for? It is bad or good or it does not matter for SEO? |

I do not think that adding a meta tag like that is a problem. It just shows someone that you do have access to the website. It confirms that you own it if you can put something like that up.
The google webmaster tools ask you to do the same to verify that you're the webmaster of a site before they allow you to see detailed info. |

Hi Chris
I understand that but it is not the case. I asked a company to exchange links with my site. They asked me rather than exchange a link, to put this meta tag in the page where they are going to link to (it is not the home page) I do not undertand why, What benefit they can get out of it?. Thanks Quote:

Could be this is how he is going to provide the reciprical link? Like this page here; http://www.netinsert.com/dir/0.0.1.2.31.1.html Pages which have backlinks from the page have this code <meta name="netinsert" content="0.0.1.2.31.1">

Yes this is a good example BUT How this can be a reciprocal link? What does this Meta do? I thought that this Meta is only to provide the author or the software used Quote:

I assume netinsert has a bot looking for the code, really have no idea, read the explanation of what they do at netinsert. Where is this guy going to place your link?

The strange thing is that they are going to put a link of MY website in their WEB and they only want that the page that I use to link their site with my site(my page on my server) to have this strange meta. Do you know what these numbers means?

Search their site and see if they have the same type set-up as netinsert, it may be a directory on there site and that is how they are going to recipricate - did they tell you what page your link will be on?

You are right. There is a similar structure to netinsert. They are going to put my page in a directory. BUT I still do not undertand how this meta can be a reciprocal link?
I have tried to look for information about this metal and found nothing. How this Meta works? Quote:

That Meta Tag isn't a reciprocal link.
Its just a method for them to determine that your site is listed in their directory so that their bot can grab your META data (Which is says it used to build the directory). I think the reason they do it this way is so that when you update your title or descriotion, so does their directory unlike many static ones that are about. I wouldn't stress it!

You mean that this Meta give them the title and description of my page? Thanks

I believe its used as a reference, like an ID number to say this site goes in this part of the directory, grab the meta data from there and use it in the directory - to the indexer / spider / bot.
It is definately not a back link. I think its just an easy way for their spider to index a site. Its easy maintenance. If there is no tag, I am pretty sure your listing would drop out. |

I can only find one example in Yahoo, looking at the link: command for netinsert, where a link was counted from a page where only the meta was there, the page index may be old meaning the link used to be there. I have no idea the benefit to them if that is the only thing you have to do is add the code and not provide a actual link back. Is it worth the time? Is there directory even indexed? All in Supps? Relevant? Quote:
I can only assume they have a bot which confirms the site maintains the meta tag like in this explaination http://www.netinsert.com/en/display.html |
