Internal Linking from the root?

I have been internal linking my pages with ../.../../index.html. I wanted to link directly from root "/" as /abc/abcd/abcde/index.html but was not possible in pc.

I can use "/" in server as I can navigate my website. But using "/" within pc, I can't navigate my webpages and can't check for errors and problems. "/" root will work fine for internet but not in pc.

Any solution on how can I use "/" and navigate within my pc?

Well it's because the "/" isn't recognized as root since on desktop is "c:\" and not http://domain.com root.

Nonetheless once a template is developed the general framework doesn't change so you truly do not need to visually see it on your desktop to know that it is correct.

i write codings in notepad and frontpage (with css) so i generate template for my self. I just wanted to use "root" "/" rather than ../../ what i have been using till now to go back to root.

But it can't be used as a directory name. If there is some softwares or any thing else with which I can use "/' use as the root in my computer itself??? and navigate within pc.

As fathom said, "/" is recognized as the root of your disk. If you place your files there, it will work. c:\ is highly unpractical, but maybe you could use another drive letter, like d:\ or e:\ or ...

Didn't Worked?

I have copied all my files to the c:\ but it didn't act as the "/" root directory. I have winxp sp1.

I think if there is some programmes or softwares which make is happen.

Please post....

There is another issue: you cannot just use "/". You need to name the file, like "/index.html" or "/index.php".

yes that the file name or folder name should be mentioned as /index.html or /folder/

but still there must be solution to the problem.......it can help everyone out......

the thing is to get to the root directory just by "/" not by ../../ and also through which you can also navigate pages within pc....i hope everyone gets that....

please post.....

Unfortunately there is not - one is a network protocol the other is a Internet protocol.

You could set your system up as a server and then you are accessing files locally [Intranet] but you need Windows 98, 2000, or 2003 server version.

I have seen many sites which uses "/" all over their pages to go back to the main root directory of the website. E.g. http://www.beanstalk-inc.com/ ....see their html codings.....and i think they don't have also intranet ro whatever to access files locally.....what do you think?

what do you normally use to go to the root of your website or if you want to go back to the main page what type of relative hyperlinks you use?

any comments will be praised....

That's because the server is left wide open... security-wise.
