Dynamic URLs: Removing the link permanently.
I need to remove an item from a site, but I'm not sure what I need to do about the URL to that item.
I know I need to do something with it, do I need to add something to the htaccess file to say it has been permanently removed?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Should I just 301 redirect to the homepage?

simple use the 301 redirect from your htaccess file!! it's the only clean and clear solution!
