Question Vote for this page? what does this do?

I just reformatted my computer and had to reinstall my google toolbar. I don't remember this being there before but it probably was and I just never noticed it. What does this voting thing do? With the smiley and frowny face for you to vote on the page? I voted for the smiley face for SEO Chat. Hee hee.

crap I thought I was one of the only people to think of that.
Really voting is not as powerful as tracking CTR on SERP's

Logs should be able to tell what the exit page is. Voting would be useful if it was more than just good or bad.

The voting button doesn't do anything at all....

:-(

I really don't know what they were thinking with that one....

I think it just makes the visitor think they can participate or make a difference. It's another of those ego things (like PR is). Participation creates a "bond" which in turn spells "revisit". BTW Revisiting a site, espacially starting from Ggl serps, can mean something, no?

LOL when I first saw the Vote buttons, I thought they meant "insert smiley here".

I've never heard a 100% answer on that one from no big seo.
nobody besides google knows if it effects your ranks at all.

I wouldn't waste a thought on it right now

It used to be a factor but as far as I have heard it has been discontinued as a factor.

I can't see how it was ever a factor...too easy manipulated. I do see how it could have been an empty function that makes Google more "sticky" to its toolbar users.

those buttons dont do anything!

Google were thinking of adding them in, but cant think of how to implement it into the algo. I reckon they will never make use of them and in next toolbar version (if there is one) they will be removed. Just make beginners who browse the web feel good about rating sites, well look at in one way if your competitors down rate you on that its better then them using alexa.

You know that Google allows its employees upto 20% of their time to spend on personal projects. Could very well be one of these personal projects. Also keep in mind that there are people clicking on those buttons. I wonder what information you would get from those buttons. May be more interesting than you'd think.

Some time ago someone noticed that clicking one of the two buttons while displaying a new web site (unknown to Google) was a good method to "call" googlebot on the new site.

I don't know if this trick works anymore.
