A year or so ago, when you would click on the buttons, data would be sent to google (you could see this if you were sniffing your network). It was gibbirish (encrypted?) though.

I do not believe it still does this.

Hmm I think I am going to start

clicking on the happy face on my site's pages just for the heck of it. And see what happens. If nothing else it will make me feel better. LMAO.

Ok, here's a wild idea for you Patty:
  • Put a smiley face on your front page
  • make it clickable
  • have a counter that shows how many times it is clicked.
  • Tell your visitors a baby in the womb gets kissed by an angel every time it is clicked!
I bet that button will be one of the most popular things on your site!! (better yet, use a tiny angle instead of a smiley face...)
Watch that click count soar!

Red face This is embarassing

I fixed the one link. Now I see I screwed up another. Geez. The reason my links are always messed up is because I never get here till two or three in the morning. I am glad my sister is doing my web design now. Who knows how many links I have messed up!!! Grumble.

If you automated a bazillion clicks would your site get banned?

No it wouldn't. The thing is that a search engine can't ban you for something that you have no full control over. If they would, it would mean that it is easy to get a competitors site banned. That doesn't help anybody.

It says in Google's toolbar help pages that the button are intended for people to rate the SERPS, not the pages found... At least that's what it says on the dutch help pages.

So it looks more like a beta test for simplified serp spam reporting.

But with so many people voting for their own pages, maybe G will discontinue the test or change the smiley buttons' functions... ;)
