We shouldn't care AT ALL.
The PR bar is merely a representation of a page's popularity. So if we prefer backlinks to our homepage only, then expect the homepage to get to highest PR value. On the other hand... If one's internal linking structure is well set-up (links from all pages to the main inner pages, sitemap etc.) then PR will flow from the homepage to the other pages. This works even better if we get backlinks (which are most often highly themed!) to our inner pages. Then again: the only DIRECT use for PR is when you're exchanging links with another webmaster, and you want to show off. If you're hunting for backlinks: any PR page contributes to your page's popularity/ranking. |

You want good PR for your most important internal pages. Your internal pages might have more specific keywords than your index page. For instance, if you sell a bunch of products, and have one that is particularly popular or has a high profit margin, you want the PR of that product's page to have a good PageRank relative to your other internal pages.
