Norton and Google Toolbars confused by IE

I have a problem with the Norton Antivirus Toolbar and the Google Toolbar getting combined into one toolbar. When I try to remove the Antivirus toolbar, it actually ends up removing the Google Toolbar (View -> Toolbars). Any advice?

Both toolbars show up in the same space. I have them like that also, but that doesn't mean that they are "combined".

What excatly are you doing to remove the antivirus toolbar?

So are you able to remove the Norton toolbar only?

Sure, I just do a right click on the toolbar, and uncheck the "norton antivirus" one.

Norton toolbar

Re: your post of 8/15 regarding removal of toolbar. IE does really confuse these toolbars. When I unchecked Norton, I lost Google. By unchecking Google, I lost Norton but kept Google. This all happened after I installed SP2. I had never seen a Norton toolbar before SP2.

That is exactly what happened to me, but I have SP1.

SP2 has been reported to screw a number of things up. It includes new security updates for IE6 and more integrated virus protection. It does not appear to like Norton and is know to incorrectly display that Norton virus definitions are not up-to-date even if they are.

I would guess SP2 has caused the problem.

I have SP1 and have google toolbar and Norton with no problems. I usually have Norton toolbar turned off but have just activated and de-activated with no problems.

I have had the same thing happen when I install the Gbar and Alexa bar sometimes. So I think it may be IE that's the problem.

I work as a computer technician, and I am constantly removing various toolbars from people's computers

I noticed this as well. You uncheck A and it removes B. So to remove A just uncheck B ;) Odd but it usually works.

There is a program called Hijack This out there that will let you get rid of BHO's (browser helper objects) as well. It is sortof like a spyware/adware removal program but instead of searching out and removing particular programs, it insteads shows you what is loading up with the computer, and with IE. Sortof like a beefed up msconfig. You can use it to remove the BHO's easily. Not to mention XP SP2 added (tools -> manage add-ons) which will let you do basically the same thing.

See the fix on Google's site . . .

This is a known issue with IE toobars that predates Service Pack 2. Google has a fix available which will "reset" the toolbars.
