New Google checksum algorithm
Is google planing to fight against google toolbar hackers?
Google has changed the Toolbar Checksum algorithm (it is not the first time, but there are not much updates). During a transition period, both algorithm are valid (if you still have an old version of the toolbar, you still can see PageRank) but in the future Google may only allow the new algorithm. If it's the case, all the tools based on the cracked version of the toolbar checksum algorithm won't work anymore...
Learn more about this by reading this blog article: Google changed the toolbar checksum algorithm
Best,
PR Weaver

Maybe that's a good thing. Maybe now Google will update toolbar PR.

Dang, I was hoping they would let it die and move onto something else.

I agree this is a good indication that PageRank on the toolbar may update in the next month..
I wonder if this is a optimal time to buy lots and/or high pr links? You may be stuck for three months with whatever PageRank they calculate in the next update.. (i.e. three months until the next update after that).
hope that makes sense,
Eric

Good - possible PR update, Bad- all those great tools become useless...but wouldn't the toolbar have to be updated?

Don't worry Balthazar; how long did it take to crack the last version of checksum? The tools will work soon enough after the switch.

true there are enough geeks out there that love this stuff they start cracking before it's even out. That's why we get to see movies before there even released.....
very
Without them I would have to do so much work

I agree... So far I haven't touched any downloadable PR tools except toolbar itself due to copyright issues. I don't like anyone stealing my content, so I don't steal anything either.
Hopefully this will be an end to PR tools. I hate when I have to tell a client why some tools should not be used altough they seem to be time savers.

To my knowledge, PR Weaver is the only PR tool that is not based on the checksum algorithm crack.
If I'm wrong please give me other names.
Just wanted to precise it ;-)

I am making a new movie "Pirates of the Internet" There is no Capt. Jack Sparrow but tonnes of coders from Phillipines, China, India & Pakistan (These are all Piracy hubs). I am sure Capt. Jack Sparrow will feel inferior ;)

It doesn't appear that Google changed much to generate the new checksum. Same guys who have figured out the initial algorithm already posted the assembler code for the new checksum.
Seems the intitial hash function is merely applied twice. You can check it yourself here.

I don't know why they even bother to update things like that. Did they really think it would be more than a few days before someone hacked it again?

Perhaps for all those people who use PR in firefox, to disturb them a little bit, perhaps everybody wont update to a new cracked version, and it will make any less users who will use the hacked solution ? .... or perhaps they thing this time it wont be hacked ?
