What's confusing is that it wasn't made any more complex...just a double hash. The conspiracy theorist in me says that the change was made specifically to be cracked -- perhaps they wanted to see who did it, or how quickly it is implemented in the available tools.

It doesn't matter a whole lot really; I can't say that I've ever used the tools anyhow, and seem to do quite well without them.

totally agree.. I used a couple tools, should say I played with some. No Dice, Google farted around faster than I could payout with stuff.

Eric I think there's a thershold for signatures. I'm pretty sure that a mod will be removing yours soon. The thershold is there for a reason... once you reach 100 posts then you will be able to have a signature.

checksum

Is the checksum algo anything to do with the DocID ?

Is it's change indicative of the conjecture that the DocID was exhausted and so they changed it

just thoughts.....

Some good points mentioned here. One thing I would point out is that SEO's and crackers represent a very small portion of the internet search community.

Ask 99% of search users what is warez or SEO and they will look like a deer in the head lights

True, G doesn't necessarily want to put a lot of effort into making SEO lives miserable (just the occasional jab will do). But their main job is supposed to be to make a good search engine. And, despite all the criticism and cursing even: G is still a good SE.

Just out of curiosity: what do you do when you want to find something (non-SEO-specific, I mean) on the internet? What do you use as your start/home page? Oi, I feel a poll coming up... ;)

Hmmm, I disagree. With the amount of searching SEO orgs do, I know they account for way more than 1%. Many scraping programs are programmed by SEOs so I'm counting all that search traffic too.

The new algorithm was now also posted as C code at Mobileread. And Alex mentioned that he was going to publish the PHP code based on the Assembler snippets tonight.

Checksum algorithm in PHP

The new checksum algo. (PHP) is posted at
http://google-blog.dirson.com/post.new/0155/
The source code is at:
http://google.dirson.com/pagerank_checksum_php.txt

Looking at the algorithm, it looks the same with some additional number crunching. The old (pre-2.0.114 Toolbar) algorithm still works, but I don't know for how long.

Once you have it you can query GG for the PR. That is (after removing spaces):
http://www.google.com/ search?client=navclient-auto&ch=[checksum here] &features=Rank&q=info:http://www.example.com/

For example,
http://www.google.com/search?client=navclient-auto&ch=64175082837&features=Rank&q=info:http://www.example.com/

The PR is the 3rd (last) field returned from the URL.
