Google Analytics

I'm using Google Analytics, and have probably a straightforward question.

When I look at the Executive View > Content Summary > Top 5 Entrances
I've noticed the first three are:

1. /
2. /default.aspx
3. /Default.aspx

I'm slightly confused as I would have thought all the links that I've gained would have been to www . mysite. com and not www . mysite .com / default.aspx or www . mysite .com / Default.aspx

Can anyone shed any light on why I get the 3 versions? what does it say about how people visit my site?

Strangely enough it could be that some of your visitors might be entering the url with default.aspx or Default.aspc at the end. Don't worry too much, just sum up all 3.

Redirect all your other default page to the site main home page.
301 redirect.

Actually, it DOES matter that you have 3 different versions. Your PageRank is being split between the 3 pages, instead of consolidated into one page. 301 redirect the #2 and #3 versions to your #1 version, and move all of the internal backlinks going to those pages to your #1 version page.

You have one good quality in an SEO, that is, perception. Now you need to improve your skills regarding how to take your perceptions and turn them into actions.

tag44 is right - you should 301 redirect all the versions to just one site.

Just wanted to point out that the most likely cause of this problem is that your Nav points to a .default instead of just mysite.com

301's could be used, but so could rel=canonical - just toss it on the homepage itself since the default's are sourcing this anyways.

If your site has been around a long time, there's a chance people have linked to you using the faulty .default.aspx, which is why I think the others are recommending 301's - to make sure any existing link value is not lost.

Redirect, But as long as you are not losing traffic, thats good.

If your site is tagged with Google Analytics tags, then the results that will appear on your report are as accurate as you can get. GA is good to not include spiders and robots. Just remember that if you tagged your site with other tools, since there are no standards on analytics, each tool will give you different results.
