What is the preferred method of doing these blogs? What software, etc.... I'd like to get in on this.

Who reads blogs, why do they read them, are they just like usenet news groups but with more colorful layout? I've heard of them but never really understood the purpose. Is it just for yourself? how do people find your blog? Is there a toolbar addition that shows "Oh, this site has a blog comment" ....

They are for people to have a rant or keep an online diary - like Belle du Jour who has signed a £250 000 book contract on the basis of her(?) blog or web log.

Blogspot is on the google toolbar cause google bought them recently - blogs are like any other website - SEO, metas etc help ranking, I have never seen one above a PR4 - please tell me if you have.

There are many blog directories around now (suprise) like Blogdex (a part of Blogspot I think), so that people can get seen. It is really a way for non web people to put pages up about themselves and their personal thoughts etc.

I have heard it said that they are irrelevant as far as bl's are concerned - I find this hard to believe especially Blogspot since Google own it. Surely any link is a link?

There are some very professionally produced blogs out there and some really crap ones - just like websites!
