If someone at Google would tell me the checksum forumula, I would write a Mac toolbar myself for them.

I was actually thinking of writing a Google toolbar, and giving the source to Google so they can insert their secret checksum... but then I figured it would be hours of work for nothing since they probably wouldn't release it...

Hi Shawn,

Have you checked the xrenoder script linked to a couple of posts back? it seems to be very accurate - any way of translating that into toolbar form or is it just too intensive (it does seem to take a long time to calculate!).

Loving your keyword tracker tool btw

No, must have missed the link, what is it?

I did think of using some of the ones that take a guess at it, but the problem (besides their ultimate accuracy) would be the load it would put on their server... You throw something like out there, and probably 250,000+ people would install it... and then all of a sudden you have 250,000 people making a request to their server for every page they are on. Would most likely tear apart the server it was hosted on... Since I'm guessing the servers those tools are on are not designed for ultra-high loads.

P.S. Glad you like the tool... it's always a good stroke to the ol' ego, no matter how many people say they like it. ;)

Goldrake posted it: http://scripts.xrenoder.com/googpr.php

It seems to not just be a guess, like the others I saw, but then again, it does make you wait 30 seconds between requests - I guess because it is pretty intensive.

For me it's doing the trick when I'm on a Mac anyway as it is.. not too fussed about having it in toolbar form.. it's so unreliable at the moment anyway! I'm convinced Google will drop the display of that PR bar at some stage anyway, to help stop the PR trade going on.

Hey, while you're at it though, how about a backlink checker that can chart the progress of backlinks as well? ;)

I tried that Xrenoders PR and it isn't accurate on back links so it does make me wonder if its that accurate! - so now I'm using both!!!

and oh, I went and brought down just the gbi.cgi from bannedlinks but I stopped there:

Actually, I put in a suggestion to Google's API division to allow PageRank to be queried with the Google API.

That would allow someone to develop their own toolbar for other platforms. And at the same time, keeps people from abusing Google's servers (since you would use your unique Google key and you are limited to 1,000 queries per day).

Who knows if anyone over there is listening though...
