Facts about Google Plus Custom / Vanity URLs

As of yesterday, lots of people were offered to change their Google Plus numeric URLs for a fancier one: plus.google.com/+Your Name

Here are some things you need to know about that:

    • Google may charge for that sometimes in the future
    • Google 302 redirects the old URL to the new one (so this won't help your newer G+ profile rank)
    • Google Authorship might not work with vanity URLs

So what's the benefit of switching? I don't know yet!
Everything will be ok in the end

If it's not ok, it's not the end

Switching to some vanity URL's (i.e. gambling, maleware, spam etc.) may also send up a red flag up to Google and could risk a chance of your Google account getting banned. Google seems to have a happy trigger finger when it comes to banning perfectly fine accounts. Gmail/G+ accounts are some of the hardest to maintain as far as banning/verifying go. Thinking about testing the new hotmail pretty soon.

    Hi Ann,

I think the real benefits at this point are purely aesthetic. Vanity URLs are easier to promote offline, they look more professional for businesses etc. I believe it could also be the tipping point for people and reluctant businesses to finally come over to Google+ from Facebook and Twitter.

It is interesting that Google are leaving things open for charging in the future. I figure as more businesses get on to Google+ they may be forced to pay for a vanity URL or be switched back (hence the temporary redirect). I don't believe they will charge individuals but it is a possibility for those that are a brand in themselves (Katy Perry, Rand Fishkin, Richard Branson etc). This is all speculation of course but it does leave another revenue stream open for Google.
