It's an estimated PR, not real and doesn't get passed on.

every site hosted on servers is given a certain amount of data transfer. when nastynation wrote "exceeding its datatransfer limit", he just meant he could not access the site because the site has exceeded its bandwidth limit. believe me, that site is not showing up in any serps.

I think Mauricio's line of thinking was ... if they've surpassed their bandwidth limit all those spam emails asking people to visit the site must have worked, because so many people have visited that they've passed their limit.
Or maybe it's just the people from this forum checking out the link Gringo. |

Hi,
Because geocities is under a yahoo flag...it has a high PR from the start already... (just try your own) I don't know the effect on google and this PR value for the value of links to other website's since i never tried to get a web placed on geocities and submitted it to google...but it could be a good test !! regards, hans |

Hans - as mentioned previously, the PR is estimated and won't get passed on to other sites. As soon as the page is properly indexed by Google, the PR depends entirely on how links to that page pass on their own PR.

Hi gringo,
Yes i know....maybe my words are not to clear !! I mean the effect..... take a website..... www.anyurl.com create a free geocities website....create some content... just what you like...hobbies you name it... put a link to www.anyurl.com inside.... upload it......it does have a high PR already because of the geocities/yahoo connection.... submit it to google... so google indexed it and you have a link to www.anyurl.com what would be the effect from the PR from www.anyurl.com because the geocities website does a have a high PR... thats my question...??? regards, hans |

I believe this answers your question - as soon as Google has indexed the Geocities site, the PR will certainly not be 7. If there are no links to the Geocities site, the link to anyurl.com will be virtually worthless. Gringo. |

Gringo, how do you know that it is a temporary PR? Do you know from experience or is there some way to tell definitively?

I can't be for sure on the PR passing onto Geocities pages. As Gringo stated the PR doesn't pass on to www.anyurl.com. But I guess one of the best ways to look at it is the Google search results.
Do a search for anything you can think of, ex: 'Harry Potter' There are tons and tons of Geocities sites regarding Harry Potter. You don't see them showing up into the top 30 results with a PR 7. Yet! Do a search for: Harry Potter fan sites You will see in the top 20 results, 3-4 sites that are hosted on Geocites and Angelfire. But I guess it also depends on link pop. for those sites. Now on some sites that give free hosting away, and many combinations etc.. besides Geocites and other big ones, there might be a possibly for the PR to transfer onto those pages. At least that is what I have seen on a few instances in the serps. Ben

Gringo is right on this one. Give it a test...set up a new geocities site. I guarantee you it will start with a PR7. Don't set up any incoming links to your new geocities site. Wait until the site is indexed by google. Your PR will disappear. Promise!
So, any links from your geocities site will be useless. Unless, of course, you build it some real PR. |
