What For?

Hello all,
What exactly is Google PR used for? I'm killing myself to get the little green bar to move, and I don't even know why.
The only time I've seen is used is if some one is selling their site they brag about the Google PR.

Thanks, Magnum.

I'll say it before anyone does ... Don't worry about pagerank and the little green bar. Worry about great content, intuitive navigation, pleasing design, and people will link to you which will have many good effects ... one of them being movement of the little green bar. But that's not the answer you really want, so here it is:

A brief but decent overview:

PageRank does NOT show the quality of your web site content. It is merely a mathematical formula based on links to a page. A site with crappy content can have high PR. Perhaps Google's original intention was that PR would reflect site quality, but the reality is often quite different.

pagerank is still important.
...but staring at the little green bar wont make it move.
[no matter how hard or long you stare at it.]
focus on site scope, relevance, depth and quality.

Maybe you didn't try hard enough, Relax

I once stared at it and it moved! Although it was after having 8 beers, I don't know if that had anything to do with it...
