Something Fishy
There is a site I found with home page PR8. It is a new site and all the other pages are PR 0. To me it looks like there is something fishy there. Google shows there is more then 30,000 inbound links to this page and when I go to those sites there are no links to the page in question. Can anybody explain my what kind of tricks where used here, and should activity like this be reported to Google?

I have seen this as well. There are a few sites in my industry that somehow have found a way to transfer link influence from one site to another.. Something server side Im sure.

could you post the url in question?
I'm guessing they've got invisible links. I've actually seen PR9 sites get away with this- www.statcounter.com

link:http://www.statcounter.com/
Results 1 - 10 of about 58,800 linking to http://www.statcounter.com/. (0.13 seconds) Thats PR9 IMO Look on http://www.deftmedia.co.uk/privacy.shtml (Google say they link to them) Do source on that page, you get: <a href="http://www.statcounter.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://c1.statcounter.com/counter.p...t=212906&java=0" alt="Free Hit Counter" border="0"></a> </noscript> <!-- End of StatCounter Code --> </td> Last edited by spirit1225 : June 20th, 2004 at 04:10 PM. |

I have heard there is a little trick that goes something like this...
* Register a domain name. * Set up a 301 redirect (permanent redirect) pointing to a high PR site. * When the next PR update occurs, that domain is given the PR value of the site it's being redirected to. ...now I read that in a newsletter somewhere and have not tried it so am not sure if it works or not. Also to get any benefit off it, you have to change the homepage back to something other than a permanent redirect, which means lossing that PR value... and hence the only real benefits in doing this are a big fat none... unless you're scamming people selling high PR text links. Best... Duncan PS: This was a FYI post and I do not condone this of course. |

Ajdee,
I forgot to mention to PM me with the URL so I can take a look and let you know. Also consider the fact that the site in question may have been advertising on the site showing the backlinks, stopped advertising on the site, and the search engine results have yet to catch up (check the cached version of the results to determine this). The site may also be cloaking, in which case you might not be seeing what the search engine sees... again, checking the cached version of the page might identify this unless they are using the nocahe tag... Best... Duncan |

Technically the links are not invisible. The code (which someone else has posted here) does not define image size which is not that uncommon, hence Google goesn't know whether the image is 1 pixel by 1 pixel (i.e. practically invisible) or taking up the entire page. It just sees it as an image linking back to the site in question. FYI - this site is apparently blocked in the PR it passes to other sites... http://www.blockedpr.com/ Best... Duncan |
