all links help.
pr7 helps more than pr6 which helps more than pr5.........
obviously if you got the choice...get all pr7.

the page doesnt really matter....links page...main page...whatever.
the pagerank of the specific page is what matters.
[disclaimer: this is not considering any other factors such as 'authority status'...etc...for each of the pages.]
pagerank is measured individually on a page basis....not per site.

you generally do not want to swap a bunch of links on your home page. that would funnel a bunch of your site pagerank away vice allowing it to flow through your site as well.

i still link to some sites on the home pages, but it is the exception and not the rule...

the reason high PR links are better is that it requires less of them to cause an effect.

if you are just trading with tons and tons of low pagerank site it is very easy to get disorganized and lose focus with your site. if you trade with questionable sites then it makes it that much harder to get another good site to link to you. pagerank is not the end all, be all, but is just a guide

The key is relevance of links. PR6 is enough to compete for any popular keywords ("Search Engine Optimization", for instance) if pages backlink to your page are relevant to the content of your page.
