Page Ranking!

I finally have proof that Page Ranking isn't quite what everybody thinks!!

I'm not saying that it's not important - which it is - but it is perhaps not quite as important as people think - or - it is interpreted differently to what people would expect - or - people interpret the principle differently to reality.

I have been banging on about this subject for absolute yonks and, took the time to research the problem, as it is an important principle. Obviously there is a lot of "emotion" around this subject but my view point came from the position of "if PR accounts for only part of the SERP why do people devote huge volumes of their time to achieving higher PR by linking?" [Note: We also spend no time linking our sites outside our own grouping]

So I created separate "mini sites" within a "global" domain [Domain 1] which is separate [country, server and content] from a specific domain [Domain 2] for a sport activity.

Now, for the history, Domain 2 has always had good rankings for a two word phrase [the activity, Activity A, and the country] but had never been optimised for a second activity [Activity B] until 3 months ago. [Under the Activity A it has a 4-5 PR on the index page] Immediately we went to No 1 and No 2 for Activity B for this Domain.

However Domain 1 has now emerged in position 3 and 4 for the same search phrase, Activity B, with its internal "mini sites" but with PR of almost 0!

What is important here however is that they are all ahead of a site with a PR of 7+ who is at position 5 !!!! [Remember we don't link and a check on links places us with about 7 inbound on Domain 2, 5 our own links, 2 others]

Over to all you people out there to think about discuss

Have Fun

There are lots of factors that go into the position of a page in the SERPs. However, in my limited experience I have always been able to defeat any page that has a lower PR for search terms that I have optimized for and spent the time to develop relevant link text.

New pages might pop into the serps above me with a lower PR but within a couple months I have either been able to defeat them through onpage SEO - or they have been given public credit for PR that was not visible at the time the page first appeared in the serps.

I can also look at pages below me in the SERPs and see higher PR pages with weak onpage optimization (at least for the search term being considered). I chuckle about this but at the same time I realize that they probably have the muscle to kick my little *** - if they ever learn how to do SEO or shift their already good optimization towards my search term.

My page rank for my site has been going crazy lately.

Today I've got 6/10, yesterday I had 0/10.

Quite - that is my point - in fact I term the most important as

THAT

T=Title [eg Job]
H=Heading1 [eg Job]
A=Anchor [eg Job]
T=Text [eg Job.....]

and if these are done it provides a quick sure method of achieving good optimisation that is cost effective rather than spending huge volumes of time on linking.
