No backlinks, but PR4?
All I have read about Google PR says that PR is based on incoming links.
One of my sites home page (and select other pages) as a PR4, which I'm pleased with...however I don't have anyone linking to my site. To be clear, I've never solicited any links from other sites, however I use overture, adwords, bizrate & shopping.com - strictly PPC. Since all of the PPC goes to specific product pages, which are all at PR0 (I think it was the "product.asp?id=1234..." I used to have in my dynamic page layout), I'm at a loss to figure out why my page rank is at 4. I am just now getting ready to embark on a link building strategy, so I was surprised to see my site (games-for-less.com) with this 'gifted' page rank. Any light that can be shed will be gladly accepted! |

How many internal links do you have, and how old is your site? New sites often get a boost, and links with a PR below 4 count, but don't show up (maybe internal) -Greg

When using link: in google, it only displays pages which have a PR of 4 or greater. You must have a great deal of links from pages less than PR4.

PR is a page per page thing... so it's not the domain PR but the page PR of the link is on. You don't need a great deal of PR3 and less page link to get a PR4. The big barrier is PR5 and UP. |

I really don't think I have any true links into my site. I've owed the domain and store for about 10 months, but recently changed hosts, and completely redesigned my site (2 months back).
When I check on Alexa.com I get this: Site Stats for games-for-less.com:
Really I'm just seeking some understanding. It may have something to do with my site being new / redesigned (as mentioned above). Since all pages on my site that do not have varibles posted after .asp are PR4, and all pages that have these are listed as PR0, then I think my general site is being "gifted" a PR4 for whatever reason, and that Google decided not to Rank my more dynamic content at all. It's still a mystery. I'm just trying to gain understanding. I have heard of others stuck on PR0 or PR2, etc...I can't even say why I'm PR4. |

Quality sites with a lot of content can be a PR 5 (highest ive seen it anyway) before any inbound links counted from google. Its really rare, though.

I have an old site I made on Geocities... I have no links and a pr5 on 8/10 pages. Most of the pages have no info on them either. Go figure.
I'm thinking of updating the content to see if it can go any higher. Handmade Soap |

PR is all about backlinks, has nothing to do with content

Must be links coming in from sites with pr of less than 4. If you have enough of those links you can get some PR.

I am not convinced PR is only about backlinks, at least up to PR4, quality of content and good SEO affects PR. Without to much difficulty we can all find sites of PR4 with little or no bl's (other than internal bl's).
Sure PR5 and above is not going to happen without at leat 80 (?) bl's (for PR5), but again without good title and description tags at the very least and good content you will not gain PR5 and above. Conclusion - it is not just about bl'z. I am probably going to get shot down in flames now! _________________________________________________ Website Works Mountainmad blog |

I agree with mountainmad and jrwrestling - I have built numerous sites and achieved pr 4 and 5 with zero backlinks... don't ask for an example though - lol - they all have backlinks now
Just to clarify - I'm talking about domains with a single page. The obvious thing to do is build multiple pages and link between them, then you always have backlinks, but it is possible to get pr without any. Next time I do it I'll post the url here!
