This is a reference to what?

I assume it was about "Statcounter" which is a noted high PR page that provides "links" [the fact that they rank is irrelevant to this discussion] which means if this is the part you said to the opposite - well your comment is irrelavant.

{you didn't read the discussion correctly.}

Statscounter was brought into this discussion to note that they provide "links" and the links they provide based on HIGH PR should be REALLY IMPORTANT... they don't seem to be and you prove that in part two:

Quote:
the first link I plucked out of the site: www.austdomains.com.au/ came up first for Australian Domains... Not quite sure I can agree with you

The first link you plucked just happen to be the least competitive phrase - surely you can do better with PR10 links? If all a PR10 links is worth is being #1 on 2 million pages... than PR isn't overly important.

I agree with you - you said the precise same thing I did... PageRank is near useless for ranking.

THANKS!

So what part didn't I read?

In the example I provided [statcounter] provides PR10 links.

Since PR is such a HIGH value to getting links to RANK you would think the MAXIMUM VALUE would provide the a noticable improvement.

BUT when you check all the links to other website and review their ranking based on the anchor text noted on the PR10 page... you need to go WAY DOWN in the competitive range to see "HIGH VALUE".

Since the average website owner would rarely acquire a PR10 link - and few PR9, and bit more PR8 but generally PR7 and below are the norm - clearly based on the premise if PR10 can only get you ranked #1 on Australian Domains - how important is it?

Not VERY!

Does that help?

PR is very important in order for rankings.

One sample (i can tell same thing for othe sites of mine too). One of my websites had a stable situation after launching a new site version, the visitors are increasing suddenly (after site launch) but then situation has stabilised.

Then, after a while i saw a suddenly increase of number of visitors and ranking on SE (without any apparent reason)... Why ? I asked myself... Then... OH ! My Page Rank increased with 1-4 points (depending on page)

PR is only an indicator of the number of links and the PR value of those links. PR as a number means nothing to your keyword placement - To say PR is very important to rankings assumes ALL webmasters/SEOs targeted links only on relevant sites.

I have an example on my own site of a PR-0 page out ranking PR-5s for the keywords/phrases I and the hundreds of searchers per week deemed important.

If you want good SERPs concentrate on your content and link building - A link from a relatively low PR page that is relevant to your content is better overall than a high PR page that has absolutely nothing to do with what your trying to say on your page.

A good SEO with high PR more than likely will have great SERPs only because the link building strategy was sound and the content was well written.

Basicly;
Great content = page optimized with keywords/phrases used by searchers.
Good link Strategy = Links from relevant sites with anchor text highlighting your keywords/phrases.
