Javascript NOT Preventing PR Leakage
Been preventing PR leakage from a site filled with affiliate links using javascript links like this-
<a href = "java script:void" onclick = "window.open('http://www.---.com'); return false;"><img src="../../Animation3.gif" alt="text"><br><br>text</a> Looking at the latest Allinurl:domain.com for this site (can't show a link as it's porn) the above link is kind of showing up!! Google result from www2.google- ----------.com/java%20script:void Similar pages ================ If googles listing it in the SERPs it's giving it a proportion of the PR and this isn't good. Anyone else seeing similar with their pages? Going to be asking this question at several places, so don't be suprised to read it on a few forums. |

Here's a very relevant thread to your question, seo-seo.... any comments on this topic?
http://forums.seochat.com/t5446/s.html ..... Also, if you are running affiliate sites, have you noticed an increase in your commiissions after installing your link URLs on the server in a .js file? My commissions seem to have gone up after doing this and I am wondering if this foils the commission sniper programs. Last edited by EGOL : September 17th, 2003 at 07:56 PM. |

EGOL I've got enough ideas to keep a dozen programmers busy for a while...
Anyone interested in a script that makes it look like you are going to an affiliate's site, but make your browser (and Google) think it is actually a page on your own site, i.e. still on your domain... |

I can do that with a redirect... either on-page or programmed on server.

I see where you are coming from with the other thread, but there are so many factors involved in a SERP that one result doesn't tell you much. Could be you did move up in the SERPs, but so did other sites cancelling out your improvement. It also looks like Googles algo is weighted a little more towards anchor text the last big move. Quote:
It's a relativly new site (only have one site with affiliate links) and so the affiliate links have always been javascript links (they aren't in an external js file though, maybe that's the way forward). I read somewhere that Google might be trying to read some javascript, my javascript link structure is very simple and so possibly the first step. When I do a search for allinurl:domain.com java (doesn't need java, but this just lists the javascript links only). I get 37 links to the domain for 'files' called java%20script:void. As far as Google is concerned it appears as though there is a file in the same subfolder called java%20script:void as the page that's got the javascript link on it. The good news is it looks like it's considered just one per page and not one link per affiliate link. So if a page has 50 affiliate links with the same javascript structure as mine Google reads it as one link to a non existent page in that folder. So it could be worse for me. That said if this is the first step to Google reading javascript it's only a matter of time before protecting PR with javascript doesn't work :-( PM me if anyone wants the allinurl link to see for yourself (must be over 18yrs old). Can't post here as it's not suitable material for this forum. |

Update on this, apears I made a typo. Should be javascript in the link not java script.
Javascript isn't something I use a lot of (bad for SEO), so didn't notice it. Funny thing is the links still work! Have found a better javascript link format now that Google can't read (he says over confidently :-)) |

maybe it doesn't follow... but it still might increment the denominator of the pagerank calculation

PR leak ?
The best way to know if there was a PR leak is to see if googlebot visited the page we were pointing in inside the java script, in my experince Google does manage to read links inside the JavaScript now, and it does read the .js files and get links from there

I have definately not had any spider crawl pages that are only linked through JavaScript.

I find it odd that that link would show up in an "allinurl" search, but it isn't a javascript link unless there's something I don't know. Javascript is one word and should be written as one word - you, and the allinurl, have it as 2 words. So Google didn't see a Javascript anything. It saw something where it expected a URL to be, and treated it as a URL. Also, the target URL isn't in the allinurl listing - just the bit between the quotes, where a URL is normally expected. My best guess is that Google will drop the "URL" when it's tried to get it a few times and got a 404 instead. In the meantime, the link will probably be included in the PR calculations, although it will be a "dangling link" and won't have any significant effect on the calculations. added:- I've never seen "java script:void" before, and it may be something that I'm not aware of. vBulletin (the software that runs this forum) automatically places a space between 'java' and 'script' to keep people from running harmful scripts from the forum.
