Internal/External links and PR channeling..
I just wondered if makes any difference for my index pages PR if I link (internaly) to:
www.whatever.com , www.whatever.com/index.htm or just to index.htm ?? And the same from external links: www.whatever.com or www.whatever.com/index.htm ?? Does it matter? (whatever.com is not my site...)

i always go with www.whatever.com, this way if you should happen to need to change index.html to index.php or default.asp, all your links pointing to your main page won't need to be changed.

i think the best way is to link to www.whatever.com insted of linking to your index file ... because you may want to change it in the future as SumOne stated before
well ... i have a site that shows the same PR for www.site.com , http://www.site.com, http://site.com, www.site.com/index.shtml, www.site.com/index.htm ... i also read on seo chat forum that some site show different pr's for http://site.com and http://www.site.com .... i think it depends a little on the server that hosts the site and it's settings |

Thanks guys.
(almost) All my external links points to whatever.com , and all of my internal points to index.htm (I'm not planning to change that one on a VERY long time..) But does it matter at all how I link internally when it comes to PR?? Should I change them to www.whatever.com instead, would that affect my PR in any way?? So many questions.. |

That one is cool, I understand that, but my main question was about internal linking: www.whatever.com , www.whatever.com/index.htm or just to index.htm ?? Does it matter when it comes to PR? All of my internal links goes back to index.htm, should I change it?? Or should I just stop worrying about it, and leave it as it is now? |

Yes it matters you want it to be the same as whatever everyone else uses so you maximise the PR. Otherwise you could end up with a pr 5 for www.whatever.com and a pr2 for www.whatever.com/index.htm (contrived example) better to combine both sets of pr onto the one page. Regards, S |

Thanks.
Maybe I'll try to make a mix of links then. |

You should always use www.whatever.com for links.

I've noticed here on SEO chat:
http://www.forums.seochat.com/ PR8 http://forums.seochat.com/index.php PR7 http://forums.seochat.com/index.php? PR6 Gotta be careful not to split your PR. I understand that www.vord.net and www.vord.net/index.html are considered one and the same, but /index.php would be quite different. For this reason alone I'd use the top level rather than a sub page for the links. ![]() |

Ok, so then I should just link to www.whatever.com internally and externally.. ??
A bit confused now, but I learn something new every day.. |

Yes that's the answer. Just link to your home page from within the site as if it was an external site. Although you'll find it a complete pain when you are checking out your site off-line, click index and suddenly go on-line. Sure it's worth it though.
